What is EFL?

Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) is the practice of exploring horse/ human partnerships in an educational setting to develop and promote personal growth and foster mind-body awareness.  It is an experiential process that typically involves hands-on activities and interactive exercises with the horse rather than regular riding.

Horses mirror ourselves back to us without illusion or judgment.  To them, emotions are simply information that allows them make decisions in the present moment and then move on.  Succinct awareness of their environment allows them to live harmoniously within it.  They communicate with each other non-verbally through the flick of an ear, a licking of lips, a sigh.  By utilizing this rich communication model and innate emotional wisdom, humans too, can learn to live a more balanced life.

EFL is a classroom of living nuance.  It helps us grow, manage change gracefully, leave old patterns behind, experience creative breakthroughs, and learn to thrive in the “here and now” at any given moment.

What better skills to prepare a young person to navigate the confusing and often contradictory roads of pre-adolescence and adolescence?  Imagine how being a master of discernment could help a corporate manager tap into that “extra effort” from his workgroup.  Or how the ability to authentically connect with a customer could win their business loyalty?  As rider, how can looking at the mirror of your horse reflect your riding strengths and weaknesses back to you?  How could you learn to ride in relation to your horse?
